The STFU Reading Society was created for Melbourne based bookish peeps to get together every second Sunday of the month, shut the f*ck up and do some reading at a Silent Reading Party!
Because our reading goals are heckers, and because reading and book pals are life! And, maybe because some of us spend more time talking about books, adding titles to our exponentially growing Goodreads TBR, and scrolling Bookstagram than we do actually reading! ... Or perhaps simply because reading is a joy, and someone once said 'Happiness only real when shared'... ? Look, just because books.
We're currently rotating around Melbourne city and city fringe parks because we love us some trees, we want to be as accessible as possible, and we'd like to keep our events cost free for our readers! Follow us on Insta or Twitter or Facebook for up to the minute locations on Silent Reading Party days, because parks are big, yo!
How does it work?
We kick off our first hour of reading as close to 11:00AM as possible, so arrive a few minutes early to find us, get set up with a picnic blanket, snacks, a silenced phone, the works. When we're settled, we read! We set a timer for our first reading session, then we have a 15 or so minute break to allow for a dash for coffee or the loos, for a spot of stretching it takes your fancy, or just to banter about our books. We then reset the alarm and read again, finishing at 1:00PM!
What do you read?
Whatever the heck you want, no judgement here! Some of our attendees are doing some fun reading challenges, so if you're looking for ideas, there are a few prompts below that might get you started, but there really are no guidelines! Chill out with an audiobook while you gaze at clouds, curl up with a comic, chip away at a classic, bring you Uni reading [if you have to!] or you could always get read a head start and read the next month's book for Women's Melbourne Network Feminist Book Club [We're big fans of the WMNs book club, so yes, here's a plug!]
You'd like some reading prompts?
Well, this 2019, SheReadsSheNoms is looking to tick off these -
The Book Riot Read Harder Challenge, which you can find here.
The Stella Prize Longlist, which you should totally check out for incredible Australian women's lit here.
Got to the end of all that but you don't like people and you just wanna talk book challenges and books and articles about books...
Well, wanna be in a siiiick Facebook group where we talk books and reading challenges all day every day? No awks face to face business [though we swear we try real hard not to make it awks, we're all dorks]? Join us in the Read Harder Forever Challenge! Set up a few years ago for some peeps committing to the Read Harder Challenge, we've evolved into something pure and bookish and lovely, or so we like to think.
